August Is National Wellness Month: Prioritize Your Mental Health, One Step at a Time

Black lettered blocks on a textured surface spell out, MAKE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH A PRIORITY..

Every August, National Wellness Month invites us to slow down, take stock of our habits, and make choices that support a healthier life. While many people might associate wellness with hitting the gym or eating better, wellness goes deeper than diet and exercise. At its core, wellness is about how you feel, how you cope, and how you function emotionally and mentally.

Though demands and distractions constantly vie for our attention, mental health is the foundation of our overall well-being. Nurturing it is always worth our time and attention. Without it, even the best physical health habits can take us only so far.

This month is a welcome reminder to focus on the habits, boundaries, and support systems that help you feel balanced, resilient, and fully present. Best of all, we can carry these insights with us through the remainder of the year and the rest of our lives.

Mental Health is for Everyone

Prioritizing mental health isn’t just for people experiencing a crisis or living with a mental illness, although there is absolutely no shame in either. Everyone benefits from tending to their mental well-being, just like we benefit from regular check-ups with a doctor or dentist.

Whether you’re navigating everyday stress, focusing on personal growth, or simply wanting to feel more grounded and calm, mental wellness practices help you show up fully in every area of life. Think of it as preventive care: By strengthening your emotional resilience now, you’re better equipped to handle life’s challenges later.

Why Mental Health is the Heart of Wellness

Mental wellness affects every aspect of our lives, from relationships and careers to sleep quality and physical health. When stress, anxiety, or burnout get their hooks in, that saps our energy, clouds decision-making, and affects our ability to enjoy the things we love.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five U.S. adults experiences a mental health condition each year. That means mental health struggles are far more common than we might realize, and addressing them is a vital part of living well. It also means we should never feel alone in our mental health challenges, because resources are available for support and understanding.

Small Steps for Big Impact on Mental Health

Improving mental wellness doesn’t require a life overhaul. Small, consistent actions often drive the most lasting change. Try starting with one or two of these strategies this month:

  • Build intentional breaks into your day. Give your mind a rest from constant stimulation. Step outside, breathe deeply, or take a mindful pause.
  • Stay connected. Meaningful relationships are a buffer against stress. Schedule time with friends or loved ones, even virtually.
  • Move in ways that feel good. Exercise is a great mood-booster, and it doesn’t have to be intense. Walking, stretching, or dancing to your favorite music can all help.
  • Practice self-compassion. Treat yourself with the same patience and kindness you would offer a friend or a child.
  • Seek professional support. Talking with a licensed therapist, online or in person, can help you navigate challenges and strengthen coping skills.

Breaking the Stigma: It’s Okay to Ask for Help

One of the biggest barriers to mental wellness is the belief that we should be able to handle everything on our own, or that it’s easier to keep our emotions inside. In reality, reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Whether you’re managing everyday stress or facing a more serious concern, a mental health professional can help you gain clarity, create a plan, and feel less alone in the process.

Resources like NAMI, Mental Health America, and Calm offer tools, information, and support for every stage of the journey.
